About This Spot

Stepping into Melvin’s Hamburgers & Hot Dogs in Elizabethtown is like slipping into a well-worn rhythm of small-town life. The moment you arrive, there’s an inviting, unhurried energy despite the line that often forms mid-day—people patiently waiting for their turn to savor something familiar and comforting. It’s a simple space where the focus is on the food and friendly service, a place where time moves just a little slower, letting you soak in the moment between bites.

The atmosphere is quietly nostalgic, with steamed buns that feel soft beneath your fingers and the unmistakable sizzle of a flattop grill working steadily. The menu mirrors this straightforward charm: no fuss, no frills, just honest hamburgers and hot dogs dressed “all the way” in mustard, chili, onions, slaw, ketchup, and cheese. This is comfort food pared back to its essentials, served with a warmth that goes beyond taste. Through the hum of quick service and the rustle of paper wrappers, there’s a sense of community — people who’ve been coming for years, newcomers discovering a local treasure, and staff who know how to get you in, fed, and out with a smile.

The simplicity here is the point. You won’t find elaborate toppings or endless menu options, but what’s on offer feels thoughtfully curated to highlight the familiarity of the classics. Pairing a burger or hot dog with a sweet iced tea feels just right—like the natural way to cool down during a sunny afternoon or to pause and reset amidst a busy day. Whether you’re sitting inside with the buzz of chatter around you or picking up to take a quick bite on the go, the whole experience feels grounded in genuine, unpretentious hospitality.

Unpretentious place serving great hamburgers and hot dogs. Be prepared. The only burger toppings are mustard, chili, slaw, onions, ketchup, and cheese. I ordered mine "All the way." It was delicious but would have been just as tasty with just meat and cheese. No fries. Just chips. There was a long line (we arrived at around 1 p.m.), but service is quick, and we were in and out in about 20 minutes. Overall, it was a great burger. The taste of the burger was 5 stars, but my preference is tomatoes and mayo on burger, and for that reason, I ranked the food as a 4., but if " all the way," isn't broke, then don't fix it. Try one for yourself if you're ever in Elizabethtow!

Went there yesterday on my way back to Wilmington NC for a quick lunch, it was the first time I've been there in thirty years. Bottom line it was just as good as I remember in the eighties and nineties. One of the best I've ever had if not the best. Melvin's Elizabeth Town NC it's a must!

So iconic, most simple serving snd atmosphere for great hotdogs and burgers! Wonder buns must be steamed since they are so soft. My wife and I both had a hotdog and burgers each for under $15. All the way includes mustard, chili, onion and slaw. My burger had no slaw while my wife had a cheeseburger with just mustard. Really appreciate the locals at the resale shop telling us how Melvin’s is written up in Southern Living. We traveled from Wilmington to buy old bricks here so I hope to return one day. Easier parking out back than on the main street out front. BIG UPDATE, they do take credit cards now!

First time at the Famous Melvin’s. Menu is simple, food is tasty and hot. Got a dog and a burger, all the way. Loved the slaw, and should have asked for extra chilly it was so good. Hot dog was tender, and the burger had that wonderful flattop crust but not overdone. Ate inside and watched a crazy long line form and be served quickly. Definitely worth a stop if in the neighborhood. Don’t let a line out the door stop you.

Believe the hype. Top tier service and friendly staff they were immaculate and very personable. All the way dog was better than expected and I had high expectations this is the spot to eat in the area without a doubt. Iconic and classic would highly recommend to any and all.
